3 Ways to Design Foam-Free

Have you heard that we are a foam free florist?
You can read more about what floral foam is and why we decide to use alternative methods in our floral arrangements and designs in our “Why Evyrose is Foam-Free” article.

There are many reasons we choose to be foam free, but some of the most important ones are that we are choosing a slower pace, to be mindful and make choices in our business that we would make in our personal lives too.

Here are three other options for designing an arrangement without the use of floral foam:

1.     Tape :

Floral tape is available in different widths and can be taped across the top of your vase in a grid pattern. First, tape the pattern across the top then add another piece of tape around the mouth of the vase to secure the ends. If you are gentle when arranging and removing your flowers, you can leave the tape secured for another design in the future.

2.     Chicken Wire :

Chicken wire is a really great and re-usable way to create a supportive grate to secure and support your floral stems in place. By creating a small wire ‘pillow’ you can easily transform any bowl, planter or vase into a floral vessel for your arrangement. It’s a very versatile technique that actually has been used for many centuries BEFORE floral foam was available.
Re-use your chicken wire pillow after the arrangement has been enjoyed, simply by taking out the flowers and removing the chicken wire form for another use – in the same vessel or a new one!

3       Metal Pin Frog :

Pin frogs are a tried-and-true method for floral arranging, and have actually been an age old technique. This sturdy base is great for a shallow dish or bowl OR even a tall vase with a wide opening. The stems of your flowers can be gently placed into the metal pins or spikes to keep them securely in place, giving them a strong footing so they can stay where you want them to and stand tall.

We love these methods of designing and mechanics, and often will combine methods based on the application or structure of our floral arrangements. Coming up with ways to use these mechanics in conjunction is also a great way for us to stay creative and think of interesting mechanics for our larger installations as well.

Hope this gives some insight into how you can use some of these options, don’t be scared to have some fun and test them out!

Your flower loving friends,
Emily & Liana
